저는 ICRC 한국사무소에 새로 부임한 대표 데이비드 마이클 메이즐리시 (David Michael Maizlish)입니다. 인류의 대의 증진을 위해 중요한 일을 하고 있는 헌신적이고 전문적인 인도주의 팀을 이끌게 되어 대단히 감사히 여깁니다. 앞으로의 어려운 시기에 우리가 함께 나아갈 수 있기를 바랍니다.
2020년 한 해가 저물어가고 있습니다. 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인해 우리 모두의 삶과 일하는 방식에 큰 변화가 있었습니다. 이런 글로벌 보건 위기 속, 변화에 대한 ICRC 한국사무소의 적응력을 자랑스럽게 여깁니다. 한국사무소의 동료들은 어려움을 잘 극복해왔으며, 새로운 도전에도 잘 맞설 것이라고 확신합니다.
동시에 ICRC의 사명과 핵심 임무는 변하지 않았다는 것을 특별히 언급하고 싶습니다. ICRC는 전 세계적으로 도움을 필요로 하는 무력 분쟁 피해자들에게 중립적이고 독립적이며 공평한 인도주의 서비스를 제공합니다. 우리는 원칙에 입각한 인도주의적 행동과 무력 분쟁을 규율하는 국제법 증진을 옹호하며, 전쟁이 세계에 미치는 피해를 제한하기 위해 활동합니다. 대한민국 국민과 정부, 그리고 대한적십자사가 ICRC의 활동을 지원하기 위해 함께 쌓아온 강한 유대에 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.
전쟁의 참혹함을 이겨내고 이를 극복한 위대한 역사를 지닌 한국인들은 ICRC의 임무에 대해 잘 이해하고 있을 것이라 생각합니다. 저는 혁신적이고 새로운 길을 찾으며, 한반도와 전 세계 인류의 대의를 증진 시키기 위하여 여러분과 함께 협력함에 최선을 다할 것입니다.

It is a great honour to serve as the Head of Mission for the ICRC in Seoul. I am humbled to lead such a dedicated and professional team of humanitarians, all of whom are doing important work to promote the cause of humanity. It is my hope that together we will move our organisation forward during the challenging times ahead.
As I write this the year 2020 is drawing to a close. We can all take a moment to reflect on how the COVID-19 pandemic forced all of us to make significant changes to our lives and to the way we work. I am proud of how the ICRC Mission in Seoul adapted to the changes imposed on us by the global health crisis. They have met the challenge, as I am sure they will meet any new challenges ahead.
At the same time, I note that very little has changed at the heart of the ICRC’s mission and mandate. Around the world our organisation provides neutral, independent, and impartial humanitarian service to the victims of armed conflict who call us for help. The ICRC stands for principled humanitarian action and the promotion of the international law governing armed conflict, limiting the harm that war brings to the world. We are grateful for the strong bonds we have forged in support of this work with the people and government of the Republic of Korea, and with our partners in the Korean National Red Cross.
With its inspiring and powerful history of overcoming the terrible consequences of war, the Korean people have a unique understanding of the importance of our work. I stand dedicated to work with each of you, to find innovative and new pathways forward, and to promote the cause of humanity here on the Korean Peninsula and around the world.
